Naturopathy is a holistic approach to healthcare that emphasises natural remedies and the body's innate ability to heal itself. Naturopathic practitioners aim to address the root cause of illness rather than simply treating symptoms, promoting overall wellness and prevention of disease. Naturopathy is often used alongside conventional medical treatments as part of an integrative approach to healthcare.

Naturopaths utilise a variety of treatments to promote health and wellbeing. This may include:
1.Nutrition Therapy through dietary recommendations and/or nutritional supplementation.
2.Herbal Medicines, in the form of liquid tinctures, tablets, powders, teas or topical preparations such as creams or compresses.
3.Lifestyle Interventions: Naturopaths recognise the importance of stress management, social support and healthy habits to promote wellbeing.
Specific treatments will vary according to the individual’s unique health concerns and preferences.

Functional testing is a powerful tool for naturopathic practitioners to provide a comprehensive insight into one’s health, going beyond what traditional testing can reveal.
Common Functional Tests in Naturopathy:
Comprehensive Stool Analysis: Assesses gut health, including microbiome composition, digestive enzyme levels, and the presence of pathogens.
Hormone Panels: Evaluates levels of hormones such as cortisol, thyroid hormones, and sex hormones to identify imbalances affecting mood, energy, and metabolism.
Nutritional Deficiency Testing: Identifies deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals that can impact overall health and wellbeing.
Food Sensitivity Testing: Detects adverse reactions to specific foods that might be contributing to chronic inflammation or digestive issues.
Metabolic Panels: Assesses markers related to blood sugar regulation, liver function, and lipid profiles to understand metabolic health.

Unfortunately, in April 2019, the Australian government removed naturopathy from the list of natural therapies eligible for private health insurance rebates under extras cover. This means most major health funds no longer provide rebates for naturopathic services.
However, as a Nutritionist I can offer rebates to those who book in for a Nutritional consultation and have the appropriate cover. Best to check with your provider first.
